After Koudelka (1985)

After Koudelka, 1985
Found bottles and tin case, fabricated knife-like form and table structure, straw and waxes.

After Koudelka (1985) emerged through a transcription of Josef Koudelka’s photograph Breakfast with Newspaper (1976).

Transcription became a passage between image and object, recognition and fabrication. Found bottles and a tin case were assembled with a fabricated knife-like form, a fragile table structure and straw, partially sealed with hot waxes. Wax both joined and obscured: a provisional binding through which the distinction between object and surrounding matter began to loosen. The table offered an uncertain support; the knife-like form retained the suggestion of an implement.

The photograph supplied a constellation of relations to be displaced and reconstituted in three dimensions. Objects acquired weight, surfaces accumulated matter, and support became precarious. The resulting assemblage held these relations in suspension, between the familiarity of things and their estrangement.
