A Drawing Ceremony is a contemplative guide that introduces a simple yet profound approach to drawing as a form of mindfulness. Created in 2022, the booklet leads readers through a meditative process anchored in close observation, quiet attention, and the humble act of drawing a small found stone and making a simple book.
Free from the pressure of skill or correctness, the practice encourages slowing down, noticing the subtle textures of the world, and discovering creativity through calm, repeated gestures. It offers a way to make art without judgement—where the act of looking becomes an act of care.
As Professor Sharon Morris explains:
'This is also a manual for forgetting ourselves in the acts of looking at and being with an other, a stone. Without the guidelines of meditation traditions, we are asked to let ourselves be guided by this stone. Drawing, an everyday habit that is accessible and cheap, and sustainable. Drawing that allows us an extraordinary focus on the particular in the way that Blake sees the universe in a grain of sand.'
